Nessler's reagent,Magnason reagent ,pottasium dichromate, lead peroxide, diphenile amine,burner,flames,ashes,fumes...no! I'm not mugging up chemistry...but this is how my brain looks when I enter the chemistry lab...We,like the scared goat in front of the lion's den stand in line outside..the much dreaded chemistry lab...I love the chemistry lab when compared to others...it actually fascinates me..Just imagine adding NaOH to magnese salt and TADA!...it changes black..but then the show is not over..just add a few drops of water and just like that it changes into bright shade of pink..Now see why I love the chemistry lab...?..
But i dread it too...O.K now i know it has become kind of an oxymoron..but thats the truth and the reason is the...analysis scheme...see its the nature of the teachers to kill the joy..(no offence meant)..
but yeah the scheme is our ticket to get into the amusing world of coloured solutions...bright flames..and cool experiments..and we have to earn one every week..I enjoying studying the scheme...but one look from our chemistry miss..everything just vanishes..she says.."ok geethika...say the test for sulphate" and once again the confusion about which i mentioned earlier forms smoke in my mind..
me: miss...um..ehem..
miss: geethika!...I have'nt got all day and neither hav u..
me: yes miss...i got it...Bacl2 test
miss gives me a sharp look.."ok take your salt and go!"....i sigh with relief and grab my salt tin..Oops!..(everybody who knnows me might me knowing how clumsy i am) and down goes the salt tin..both miss and i stare down at it..gulp!..she made me clean the place..phew! thats the least punishment i expected anyways...
i picked up the refilled tin and walked carefully to my place...why carefully?..because i was balancing the salt tin,2 test tubes,a test tube holder and a matchbox in my hands..
no wonder why people say that i never learn from my mistakes..hehe...so finally i was ready...but the big question was..to do WHAT?...
i figured that i should ass NaOH first..no positive result..next conc.H2SO4...and poured it into the test tube..OUCH!...a cry emerged from another corner of the lab..my friend had spilled con.HCl on her hand...and after that a couple of dramatic scenec occur..like miss running towards her and making her hold her hand in cold water...she with her eyes shut tightly...and after that calmness spreads...
but MY confusion never ends....i add pottasium chromate instead of pottasium dichromate...and now i know that a "di" can make all the difference...i went with a watch glass for ash test and test tube for flame test...where in fact it should've been ulta..i added HNO3 to ash test and H2SO4 to flame test..(i did that right)..and then the worst thing happened...my filter paper burnt and created a hole on itself..abd finally when i am about to unveil the mysterious salt...the bell rings...and a voice says..."everybody clean ur places and clear the lab in 2 minutes..."...and there goes one a a half hours of complete confusion...i exhale deeply as i hand over the now yellow lab coat to some friend (of course i forgot to bring mine..) i trudged to the class...
